Nintendo Wii Fit

April 24, 2008 - By Gregor Rohrig

The Nintendo Wii Fit launched yesterday in Europe and South Africa respectively. Most Nintendo Wii users will have heard of this product by now, for those who have been too busy trying to reach Pro level on Wii sports golf and missed out on the news, here is a short run-down:

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

It looks like an extra large scale, but is a high-precision monitoring board. It measures and monitors your BMI (body mass index) and your balance, then allows you to simulate a variety of exercises and games by standing on it and moving your body. The Wii Fit also allows gamers to set their personal fitness targets, which a personal trainer then helps them to achieve.

Gamers are not only forced to get up and move their bodies, they are also encouraged to have fun at the same time with the genuine intention of getting fit. The system comes with an array of games ranging from Yoga, Aerobic Exercise, Muscle Workout, and Balance Games.

In a short press brief, Matthew Grose, General Manager of Core Gaming, the South African representatives of Nintendo, emphasized that the Wii Fit is all about fitness AND fun. He also re-iterated that obesity is not only an American, but also a South African issue, one that can be partially combated by doing regular exercise. The Wii Fit in this case comes in handy for all those who hate working out, as it detracts from the actual physical workout and focuses on the fun and entertainment factor.

The Wii Fit will retail for R999.95 in South Africa, and will be available from May 2008 onwards. It will definitely change the fitness routines of many gamers.
