Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000

April 23, 2008 - By Justin Hartman

The LifeChat LX-3000 headset has got to be the best headphones I’ve ever used for everything except music. It’s ironic how such a highly optimised headset can play podcasts and other voice related audio in superior quality but when it comes to normal music these headphones are unusable.

It’s not surprising however because the LifeChat LX-3000 was actually intended for Internet chat and has been optimised for Windows Live Messenger but it works on an Apple Mac just as well.

The headset boasts the following rather cool features:

  • Digital USB for reliability and clarity.
  • Leatherette Ear Pads
  • Noise-canceling Microphone with 180-degree movement
  • Six-Foot Cable
  • Windows Live Call Button
  • Easy Audio Switching
  • Volume control via remote
  • Mute button on the remote

The headphones are comfortable to wear, even if you do look like a pilot of a Boeing 747, and they cancel out all outside noise so you can really listen without being interrupted. The built in microphone has an uncanny ability to focus in on your voice and omit outside interference which is great news for someone on the other end of your conversation.

The fact that the LX-3000 uses one USB port is somewhat or a rarity in multi-function audio and microphone devices and the built in remote is fantastic for controlling volume, switching calls and muting the microphone.

Unfortunately though the ability to play actual music with the LX-3000 leaves much to be desired. The bass is way to heavy for music and the quality of music audio is pretty poor.

Quite simply put, the Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 is perfect if you use Skype or Windows Live Messenger and it’s probably the best headset I’ve used for Internet communication but be warned - don’t get rid of your iPod headphones just yet.

Recommended to use with Skype, but not sure how to use the inline control. No response when using the Skype Test Call. Told that I can’t be heard and that the microphone must be muted. What have I done that I can’t be heard?

Got something to say?
