Solar Charger - the all-in-one
April 8, 2008 - By Guest Reviewer
I was given a great little gadget that can manage all of your power issues. The Solar Charger is an almost all-in-one, do it all, power solution for the shedding of Eskom’s load. If you haven’t charged your cellphone with thanks to the darkness of the evening before, fear not. The sun can save you.
It looks like Motorola’s Razr and is nifty enough to pack in a jacket pocket. The Solar Charger comes with various connectors for almost any gadget that needs to be charged to work. I keep saying almost because I am sure there will be someone, somewhere who is going to find a gadget they bought in Papua New Guinea or some other obscure place that uses a 15-pronged plug to charge it. Just covering my bases you see. For a detailed view of what’s available in terms of connecter have a look at the site.
So in essence you simply leave the Solar Charger out in the sun for a while, The best I could do without forgetting or losing it was a couple of hours. Then when you see your battery indicator flashing irritatingly on the screen of the gadget you’re using simply find the right connector and plug in the charger. It will begin charging. Too easy.
Now there is another option for charging your charger (that makes sense I think). It comes with a car-ligher-charger-connector thing. You can then plug in the car charger and hook it up to your Solar Charger and let the car do the work.
Not only is that nifty on its own, but you can also plug the charger in to the lighter of your car, plug the phone in to the charger and charge the phone while you drive too.
This all sounds great, but alas, the car-lighter-charger-thingy wouldn’t work for me. I jigged and jabbed and maneuvered and mixed it up but nothing. It wouldn’t shine, that little red “on” light just wouldn’t shine. After a twenty minute drive home, two almost-accidents and much cursing I gave up. I am assured that this is a one time fault so hopefully if you decide to go down the energy efficient gadget charging route your car-lighter charger will work!
I can’t say that this bad boy is the primary way you should charge your phone, it’s simply not. But it is a great way to avoid the wife getting upset with you because your phone was dead. Plug in, charge up and manage the damage till you get home.
Nifty gadget for sure and well worth the purchase.
